Deep-Sea Life Near Hydrothermal Vents

Even life on Earth can surprise scientists. The strange deep-sea creatures in this ecosystem, discovered in 1977, thrive on chemical energy rather than sunlight. A variety of animals live near hydrothermal vents, including the shrimps, crab, and anenome in this picture taken at the Indian Ocean vent. Image courtesy Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
