Tufa at Mono Lake

Eerie looking mineral towers called tufa rise out of Mono Lake, in central California. Some scientists think that these strange features hold important clues to the search for fossils of ancient life on Mars. Tufas are formed when freshwater springs containing calcium well up through alkaline lake water which is rich in carbonates. Photo Credit: Tony Phillips.
