The Observer

The observer uses synthetic spectra from the VPL to compare with data from advanced planet finding telescopes like Terrestrial Planet Finder (currently in development). As a prelude to the mission, VPL results can inform observers on what to look for in the data and how to design the instruments to detect signs of life on worlds orbiting other stars. In addition, planetary scientists use the results to perform "experiments" on novel planetary environments, creating worlds not otherwise accessible to study, like the environments of early Earth and Mars.
