Atmospheric and Surface Optical Properties
The reflectivity of a planetary surface is modified by a number of factors: the types of rocks on the surface, the amount of water or ice on the surface, and the existence of clouds in the atmosphere. The planetary model predicts what materials should exist near the surface and in the atmosphere, and measurements from laboratories and observations of planets in our own solar system give us an idea of how these materials interact with the incoming light from the Sun.
